Hear what winners say
“Recycling can be boring, inconvenient and confusing, so I wanted to add humour and clarity, I added icons to represent the materials, making this a universal concept. Good design should have two values – the emotional and the functional. Design is getting better in Hong Kong as local brands grow and designers develop a more global outlook; plus the government is providing more funding, this award helps promote our brand, expand our network and meet buyers and the media.

“Our inspiration is to take every-day products and present them in a different way to make life simpler,” says Mr. “We may do this by use different or unusual materials, or make something multi-functional.” The company believes that winning awards draws buyers’
attention and highlights the fact that P.S.L. focuses on high levels of design. “Effective design is important because business is getting more competitive. In terms of design it is necessary to not only think about the product but the marketing aspect, too.”

Our e-commerce business, established in 2000, took off during the SARS scare when people preferred to stay home and shop online. We now gross 1.1 to 1.2 billion New Taiwan dollars of business monthly, trading mainly the 3C products (computers/communications/consumer) that take up 70% of our e-commerce volume; daily necessity, beauty products and others make up the rest. After we adopted a delivery-within-24 hours practice, we witnessed a zoom in trading of household items, the next growth area. We came to last year's electronics fair in Hong Kong for the first time and we are back to the gifts and premiums fair this year. We see many products that complement well our current product range. They will give our customers more choices on top of the 700,000 products we sell online already. The mobile chargers, USB plug-in and some bluetooth gadgets have potential in the Taiwan e-tailing market.
Sam Tang, Manager of E-Commerce, PChome, Taiwan
The company does US$12 million worth of imports and wholesale for gift shops in Russia, including 25 shops under our own name. The Russian boom has not been dampened by the economic slowdown in the U.S. and Europe. We opened four new shops in the first four months of this year, and we maintain the momentum by adding 25 more franchise shops to the roster this year to reach a total of 50 by the end of 2013. A first-time visitor at the Fair, I am glad to say that within the first three hours of the first day I have already spotted some good ideas that will do well in Russian market. They include multi-function gadgets and smartphone accessories, which are novel and value-for-money.
Novozhilova Maria, Head of Department (Buying and Franchise), LEFUTURE, Russia
Our group started as a shopping mall developer in Thailand. We built the first mall, the Siam Center, in Bangkok 25 years ago. We became a licensee of the Japanese Loft and got into retail when we opened the Siam Discovery mall nine years later. Today, we run three Loft shops and have certain autonomy in merchandising decisions. Despite political upheavals and natural disasters, our business has grown well, averaging 10-20% annually. So far, our star sellers are IT accessories and high-end stationery and products with a twist that tickle customers. The Fair is most useful to me to get good value-for-money IT products and items of good design. The MOQ requirement is also more flexible nowadays, making it easier for me to place orders.
Suwipha Wannamanomai, Merchandising Director, Siam Speciality Co., Ltd., Thailand

Our key competence is high-end stationery of classy graphic design and thematic illustration, such as The Little Prince and Alice in Wonderland, appealing to women 20 to 30 years of age. We took our nine-year-old company to the Fair last year for the first time. There was a lot of traffic and real good business to be made. We received around 150 groups of visitors last year and about 10% of them placed new orders. An estimated US$300,000 of business was generated at the Fair, which also introduced to us our Australia/New Zealand distributor. They placed orders up to US$90,000 in the past year and initiated joint product development with us. Our attractive stationery also opened doors to department stores for our distributor in Australia. It's been win-win for both. That's why we are back.
Curro Tak, General Manager, 7321 Design, South Korea
Our products highlight innovation for daily life. Within our first year of operation, we presented two product categories to the market: touchscreen-enabled gloves for smartphones and online gaming devices, and flexible silicon bracelets that also function as touchscreen pens. Yes, they are both smart mobile device accessories. We are very happy with the fairground traffic flow and the number of inquiries we receive here. Hence we are hopeful to achieve our purpose of branding AEGLO, winning orders and identifying distributors. On top of that, we have also collected useful market intelligence for us to adjust our product design, pricing strategy and packaging specification. This Fair is definitely good for my young company.
