| Celebrating Bright Business Prospects |
| The opening of the fair was celebrated on Day 1 with a networking reception that brought together VIP buyers, industry officials and international media. Guests enjoyed canapés and drinks in a relaxing atmosphere, as well as being entertained by a musical performance – a great way to make new acquaintances and renew old friendships! |

"The good gift items are relatively inexpensive but prove to be keepers. This is where good product design makes the difference. This competition is a good start to highlight the importance of design and to raise design consciousness among Hong Kong merchants. I am pleased to have this opportunity to get to know some of the local designers and their work."
Roger Shing, Corporate Director of Procurement, New World Hospitality, Hong Kong
"The gifts industry is an important sector for Hong Kong exports. Our key strengths are: we stay close to the market and are sensitive to cost considerations; hence our designs are functional, practical, affordable, easy to produce and with a strong international flavour. Facing the challenges of steep competition and an uncertain economic climate, we see the necessity of adding value to our products through coming up with more original designs."
Chi-wing Lee, Design Director, Milk Design Limited, Hong Kong |
| International journalists were on the go early with a Breakfast Briefing. "2012 is a very important year for our company. The company was founded by a Korean designer seven years ago on March 21. He targeted making our stationery design and manufacturing firm a market leader within seven years. Well, we met the deadline and we are now one of the major players in Korea. We heard about the Hong Kong Fair when we were in Europe and decided to come here to expand our export business to the Chinese mainland. So far, our export business accounts for 30% of total volume, selling chiefly to Spain, Japan and Hong Kong. Now we would very much like to make contacts with big Chinese bookstores, especially ones with good ambience to provide the right environment for our high-end products."
Ying Ling Zhang, Designer, 7321 Design, South Korea

"It's been a very hectic day at the booth. More than 50 groups of visitors came to see our products and made enquiries. We are off to a very good start at the Fair and hope it can catapult the business overseas. Frankly, the attention we get is better than what we had expected. To keep the planet green we are committed to promoting and distributing green products, even at the cost of narrower profit margins. The product line we launch and feature this year is thermal cans made of a cornstarch-based material called PLA (polylactic acid). They look plastic and feel plastic but they are so much more environmentally friendly than plastic; our bottles are reusable, recyclable and compostable as well as machine-washable and microwave-ovenable."
Phoebe Wong, Director, Meke Marketing Consultancy Limited, Hong Kong

"We go to the world to make "Designed in Taiwan" a strong brand. Featuring six participating vendors and their products–from stationery, wall decoration, tea sets to mobile phone accessories–our booth is a showcase of design work with Taiwanese characteristics. It is the manifestation of a unique and profound cultural mix of Chinese, Japanese and American elements. Taiwan Design Center is a national design center established with government support in 2003. It is an integrated service platform for the promotion of creative design and a launch pad for the design industry on the island to expand into overseas markets. Although this is our first-ever show in Hong Kong, I can feel the buzz and dynamism. The Hong Kong Fair has great potential to be further explored in the future."
Pei-Ning Lee, Project Manager- Design Industry Consultancy Section, Taiwan Design Center, Taiwan |

"I came to the Fair at the initiation of the organiser. Thanks to HKTDC, I have discovered the most interesting show there is. I see so many interesting things that I don't want to leave. This is my fifth visit and I am budgeting three days to walk the halls and visit the booths. I buy for the 26–soon to be 29–shops in our group of companies, mostly in Moscow and other cities with populations of over 1 million, selling games and gifts. In the past 18 months the orders I have placed to the suppliers at the previous editions of this Fair have reached US$1 million."
Pavel Gizatulin, President, Hitzona Group, Russia

"We are engaged in importing business for Internet shopping in Korea, carrying products from watches, clocks, USBs and other computer accessories. In my 10 years of attendance at the Fair, I find it an excellent platform to spot trends–products trends as well as business trends. Thousands of exhibitors from dozens of countries display a wide range of items here. From the show this year I can tell that IT products are still gaining popularity. I am delighted to see the launch of the Small Order Zone. You know, making small orders available is important. This practice opens up more channels to more distributors, small and big, to compete on a level playing field. The competition will get tougher still. That's another trend I am observing. When it comes to organisation, this Fair is superior. It is number one."
Chul Min Lim, President, Bogo Trade, Korea

"My first impression of the Fair is there are so many wonderful things of high quality. Being one of the biggest tourist attractions in New York City, our museum shop carries jewellery, textile, stationery and a wide variety of products, and our merchandising is moving away from the traditional format to the novelty format to appeal to visitors from all over the world. I came to the Fair with a long shopping list and I have been taken by the organiser to business-matching meetings one after the other. To uphold the museum image, the product we sell must be of a high safety and quality standard. We prefer to source from suppliers in southern China because they are more reliable, experienced and international-trade savvy. Therefore, the Fair in Hong Kong suits us just fine."
Stefanie Levinson, Divisional Merchandising Manager, Printed Products, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, U.S.A.
